Authentication mechanism in JIRA

JIRA is a web-based tool used by multiple users, each having different permissions depending on the group they are part of or what role they are performing in the project. JIRA has a built-in authentication mechanism known as JIRA internal directory, but it's possible to connect JIRA to external directories as well. Let's take a look at how this is done.

JIRA internal directory

JIRA comes with an internal directory that is enabled by default; the first administrative user is a part of the internal directory, and, until you add another directory, all additional users are added in this internal directory. JIRA stores this in its own database.
