Key benefits

  • Explore Go’s profiling tools to write faster programs by identifying and fixing bottlenecks
  • Address Go-specific performance issues such as memory allocation and garbage collection
  • Delve into the subtleties of concurrency and discover how to successfully implement it in everyday applications

Description

Go is an easy-to-write language that is popular among developers thanks to its features such as concurrency, portability, and ability to reduce complexity. This Golang book will teach you how to construct idiomatic Go code that is reusable and highly performant. Starting with an introduction to performance concepts, you’ll understand the ideology behind Go’s performance. You’ll then learn how to effectively implement Go data structures and algorithms along with exploring data manipulation and organization to write programs for scalable software. This book covers channels and goroutines for parallelism and concurrency to write high-performance code for distributed systems. As you advance, you’ll learn how to manage memory effectively. You’ll explore the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) application programming interface (API), use containers to build Go code, and work with the Go build cache for quicker compilation. You’ll also get to grips with profiling and tracing Go code for detecting bottlenecks in your system. Finally, you’ll evaluate clusters and job queues for performance optimization and monitor the application for performance regression. By the end of this Go programming book, you’ll be able to improve existing code and fulfill customer requirements by writing efficient programs.

Who is this book for?

This Golang book is a must for developers and professionals who have an intermediate-to-advanced understanding of Go programming, and are interested in improving their speed of code execution.

What you will learn

  • Organize and manipulate data effectively with clusters and job queues
  • Explore commonly applied Go data structures and algorithms
  • Write anonymous functions in Go to build reusable apps
  • Profile and trace Go apps to reduce bottlenecks and improve efficiency
  • Deploy, monitor, and iterate Go programs with a focus on performance
  • Dive into memory management and CPU and GPU parallelism in Go

I recently been a long time JAVA developer and started to write items in Go e.g Kubernetes Controllers/Operators. Has been a while since I learned a new language for work and if starting out new, learning performance-related items will set you on the right path. This book has been incredibly helpful on my Go journey.

The book moves quickly but does offer supporting background technical tidbits about the language as well as the algorithms discussed and has plenty of examples, which is good if you are like me and haven't touched this stuff in a while.

I wouldn't recommend this book to someone just starting out in Go, but it is good for someone who has written Go code before and wants to learn how to write more efficient code or just wants a refresher on the basics of Go. It is a shorter book and covers the basics of Go very quickly. It does go into depth when it comes parallelization, memory management, algorithms and other performance base topics. So if you ever wanted to know more about how the internals of Golang works and which algorithm to use for performance, this is a book for you.

I do love performance, but this book is not about it per se, it scratches a bit of everything and that’s not very pleasant read — I did expect more deep dives and details about designing performant software rather than introduction to different topicc here and there. Is this book useless then? Nope, it does have some information if you’re not experienced golang developer, so give it a try if you didn’t know about pprof and golang tracing. Just do not set expectations too high.

The first 55% of the book shallowly touches just different aspects of the Golang with very little correlation to the performance. These chapters are very shallow. For those content, you should read other Golang books that go deeper into the language itself. A large portion of it is about Big-O notation and different data structure's performance. It doesn't belong to a language-specific book. You'd better read any generic data structure textbook. Then it goes into memory management and suddenly goes so deep into the system memory allocation. If the readers need help with big O notation (in the first few chapters), I don't know the logic behind this, and I don't think it serves the reader well. The later part of the book has some helpful content, such as tracing and profiling your program. These are useful tools, but the book serves more like a manual rather than a more profound discussion around how to build your application to be scalable and performant.Overall, I don't recommend this book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
